Your SEO retainer isn’t just two articles a month. Here’s the real work

It’s the question every good client eventually asks: “You fixed the on-page SEO in month one. After that, what do you do to earn the retainer — two articles and a report?” It’s a fair challenge. And if that’s genuinely all an agency does, the client is right to walk. So here’s the honest answer.

On-page is month one, not the whole job

The assumption behind the question is that SEO is a one-time fix. It isn’t. SEO is competitive and dynamic: Google ships several core updates a year, your competitors keep publishing, and search results shift underneath you. Stop working, and your rankings decay within months. A retainer isn’t maintenance — it’s compounding growth plus defence against a moving target.

What actually happens every month

A real monthly rhythm looks like this:

  • Read the data — what moved, what’s stuck, where the opportunity is.
  • Push near-misses to page one — pages ranking just off the first page are the fastest, highest-ROI win in SEO, and they never run out.
  • Grow the content library — new optimised pieces that build authority on the topics that win customers.
  • Keep content fresh — update older pages before they slip, because search engines reward freshness.
  • Catch what breaks — broken links, indexing issues, speed regressions, as the site changes.
  • Build authority — ongoing citations and quality links.
  • Report and plan — what moved, what we did, what’s next. Never a dashboard dump.

The honest part

SEO compounds over three to six months, and no honest agency guarantees rankings — anyone who does is selling you something. What a good retainer guarantees is the work that reliably grows organic traffic, and the numbers to prove it.

“You’re never “done” with SEO, because Google and your competitors never stop. The day you stop paying is the day you start sliding back.”

So the test for any SEO retainer is simple: can they show you the optimisation loop above, and does the monthly report show thinking — or is it two articles and an auto-generated dashboard? If it’s the latter, they’re right, and you should look elsewhere.
