Every agency now says they “use AI”. It has become background noise — and worse, it has started to cost businesses money in the wrong direction. Because the phrase hides two completely different things, and confusing them leads you to pay a premium where you shouldn’t, and to overlook value where it actually is.
Two very different meanings of “AI”
When a studio tells you it uses AI, it means one of two things:
- AI as a method — how they produce the work. They use AI tools to build your website or write a first draft faster. This is about their internal process.
- AI as a product — what you actually receive. They build AI into your business: a support agent trained on your data, an automation that handles a manual task, a search feature inside your app.
These are not variations of the same thing. One is a production detail. The other is a capability you couldn’t build yourself.
Why it changes what you should pay for
If AI is just the method, you shouldn’t pay extra for it — and you shouldn’t be told about it either. You care that the website converts and ships on time, not which tool drafted it. In fact, an agency that leads with “we build your site with AI” is inviting exactly one response: “then it should be cheaper.”
“You buy a hole, not the drill. Nobody hires a plumber because of the brand of wrench in his bag.”
AI as a product is the opposite. Here the AI is the deliverable — the thing doing real work in your business. It’s technical, it compounds in value, and it’s where a genuine specialist earns a premium. This is the work worth talking about, because it’s the work you can’t get from a template.
How to tell which one you’re buying
A quick test the next time an agency mentions AI: ask what you actually walk away with.
- If the answer is “the same website, but faster to make” — that’s method. Fine, but not a reason to pay more.
- If the answer is “an agent that answers your customers 24/7”, or “an automation that saves your team ten hours a week” — that’s product. That’s the part with real ROI.
At Onlime we keep the two separate on purpose. We use modern tooling to deliver foundations — sites, apps, SEO — faster and at a fair price, and we don’t charge you for the tooling. Where we go deep, and where the real edge is, is AI engineering: agents, automation and product features built to production standard. That’s the AI worth paying for.
