How much should a website actually cost in Australia?

Ask three agencies what a website costs and you’ll get three wildly different numbers — from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands. That’s not because anyone’s lying; it’s because “a website” can mean ten different things. Here’s an honest guide to what drives the price in Australia, and what a fair quote looks like.

The honest ranges

Roughly, and depending on scope and who builds it:

  • A single, well-designed landing page or a small custom site: low thousands.
  • A full multi-page marketing site with custom design, CMS and integrations: mid-single-digit thousands and up.
  • A web app or SaaS platform with accounts, dashboards and billing: this is software, not a website — budget accordingly.

The number matters less than what sits behind it. A $500 site and a $5,000 site are rarely the same product priced differently — they’re different products.

What actually drives the price

  • Custom design vs a template — bespoke work costs more, but it’s yours and it converts better.
  • Number of pages and unique layouts.
  • Integrations — CRM, payments, booking, email, analytics.
  • Copywriting and content — good words are a real part of the cost.
  • Who does the work — a senior team costs more per hour than an offshore template factory, and the result shows.

Template vs custom — when each makes sense

A DIY builder (Wix, Squarespace) is genuinely fine if you need a simple presence and you’ll maintain it yourself. Pay for custom when the site is a real sales channel — when design, speed, SEO and conversion actually move revenue. The mistake is paying agency prices for a lightly-reskinned template, or expecting a $500 build to perform like a $5,000 one.

“You’re not really buying pages. You’re buying how many customers the site turns from “just looking” into “got in touch”.”

The quotes that should worry you

  • A price with no scope — a fair quote says exactly what you get.
  • Suspiciously cheap builds that lock you into a platform you can never leave or edit.
  • Ongoing “maintenance” fees that don’t explain what’s actually being done.
  • No mention of who owns the site and its content when it’s finished (you should).

Our own answer to all of this is a fixed price with a clear scope, written down before we start — and you own the result. No surprise invoices, no lock-in. If a quote can’t tell you what you get and what you’ll own, that’s the real red flag, whatever the number is.
